Books

"Print is dead" - Egon (One of the Original Three Ghostbusters)

About half way through college, I developed an appetite for books that some would consider "excessive". I read. A lot. A common practice is to read up to a half-dozen books at once. For example, right now I'm in the middle of:
"Term Limits" - A political fiction paperback that I bought at Target for 6 dollars. It's OK.
"A Long Way Gone" - This is some memoirs of a boy from Sierra Leonne who was forced to fight in that country's civil war. I'd suggest it to anyone but it is real to the gruesome nature of the material. So, beware.
"The Voice of Luke" - Brian McLaren and the people of The Voice Project are doing some good work. They are going through the gospels and translating them into a kind of modern format with running commentary. Good stuff. You can check out all the project's offerings at http://hearthevoice.com/
"The Road" - Another fiction book about a guy and his son travelling through a barren wasteland America after some catastrophe has wiped out most of the civilization. Um...this book already stinks. Choppy and hard to follow. I bought it at WalMart on Saturday when I went to have my tires replaced. Took 3 and a half hours. Do you believe that?
"Basic Economics" - Thomas Sowell is perhaps one of the smartest dudes on the planet. This book is his explanation of economics to normal folk. Should be required reading for anyone that votes.

I married a woman who loves books as well. We can spend years in a book store. Walk around a little together then split up and head to our own sections of interest for a while and slowly mozy our way back to each other. I'll usually have an armful of books and she'll have a few as well (she's such a lightweight-she really can't hold her literature.)

So, the cliche' apparently works here. "Read any good books lately?"

Heh heh. Yeah, I do believe that. I went to Walmart on Monday (you know...my day off) to get an oil change and tire rotation. Three hours. I spent most of that three hours in the book section, skimming through both "23 Minutes in Hell" and "90 Minutes in Heaven."

The one about hell seems a little out there. I'd be more likely to believe the one about heaven.

I gotcha beat on the Wal-Mart story. 2 weeks ago I spent 6 hours waiting for them to change my tires. I would have just dropped the car off, but when I got there at 8:30 am they said it would only take an hour and a half. As the ole cliche goes "You get what you pay for". Always low prices, always long waits.

Alan, I married a man that cringes if he sees the pages of a book folded or crinkled. He respects not only the content but the appearance--they are that special. We did not have a lot of money to go on extravagant dates in college or now for that matter (!), so a cheap, enjoyable date night for us includes 2 simple things: a Starbucks coffee (preferrably a pumpkin spice latte) and all the books of Barnes and Noble to gaze through for free. :)
