"In the Word"

I try to read some Bible often. Some weeks I do better, some weeks I do nothing. I grew up with memory verses and such and then went to college at a place where I had the equivalent of an academic minor in Bible. But, rarely do I read a passage that moves me. ( I hope I'm lonely in this confession but I bet I'm not.) I'm not given to outbursts of artsiness so the Psalms aren't usually a place I go. What a mistake. On Sunday, I read these words. Yesterday, I read them again and today at work I actually spent time thinking about the individual words and phrases. (I think this is what you spiritual discipline people call "meditation".)

A psalm of David. When he was in the Desert of Judah.
1 O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water.
2 I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory.
3 Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you.
4 I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands.
5 My soul will be satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise you.
6 On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night.
7 Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings.
8 My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me.
9 They who seek my life will be destroyed; they will go down to the depths of the earth.
10 They will be given over to the sword and become food for jackals.
11 But the king will rejoice in God; all who swear by God's name will praise him, while the mouths of liars will be silenced.
When's the last time you read something in our sacred literature that moved you and what was it?
That's Psalm 63 by the way...

Hmmm...most recently, I remember being so moved by a simple scripture...one that I'd doubtless read countless times...that it brought me to tears. It's found in Exodus 14:10-14. I blogged about it here.

Funny how you can read something, not necessarily new, but you read it at just the right time, and it speaks to you like it has never spoken to you before.

Funny...seems like this word really is living and active...

The first time I really read Isaiah 58 was like the first time Willy Wonka tried chocolate in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. My whole world was opened up, and I began to see the implications of what God was trying to do through Jesus.

I love Psalm 1 and the man who meditates on the word day and night.

I don't actually do that, but I'd love to have it in my mind at all times.

Blessings
