"Penny"costal

One of the girls I work with is Pentecostal (She makes fun of me for the way I say that word like there is a "y" right in the middle). The past few weeks we've been randomly asking each other questions about the churches we attend and what we do and don't believe about Christ, the bible and such. We've talked about communion which her church does not yet celebrate because of some old traditional belief that it is a spiritual feast instead of a physical one. Our conversation lead her to ask the leadership of her church the reasoning behind not taking communion and she found that they are in the midst of studying that very subject to see if there is something else they should be doing. We've also talked a bit about speaking in tongues and some other views about just what exactly the Holy Spirit is and does. Very, very, very interesting stuff about the "evidence of the indwelling of the Spirit." I've learned that the vast majority of the differences between our denominations (and the Church of Christ is a denomination) is cosmetic rather than doctrinal. I know that she reads her Bible more than I do. In fact, she reads a chapter in Proverbs every day (There are 31 chapters so she reads the chapter that corresponds with the date.) In talking with her, I've realized that I know a ton of things about the Bible but actually very little of the Bible itself. I read books all the time. I'm in the middle of 6, count 'em 6, books right this moment. Maybe I've got it backwards. I need to read more Bible. Kudos to those of you that already do and keep it up...

By the by, thanks to everyone for you kind comments about the class on Sunday. I was pretty nervous but it was a good experience. Thanks for the kind words and support.

Good post. You'll have to share more of these "very, very, very interesting" conversations if you get a chance. Thanks!

I guess we're having a mini-revival of sorts...

Megan, I heard about that earthquake in Lima. How far is that from Arequipa?

The city that it hit hard, Ica, is about half way between Lima and Arequipa. I have not heardthe word on damage done to Arequipa. I am hoping that no news is good news.

Interesting post. Do you think we are arrogant or ignorant or something else when we use code words like "the church" and mean ONLY THE CHURCH OF CHRIST?
