It shouldn't surprise you that I'm a conservative. Most of the time that means I like to envision a great big red "R" beside my name. I also possess a perfect score when voting for Presidents. Each time I vote, that man wins. Logic would dictate that in order to win the White House, a candidate must have my vote. (My reasoning is undeniable.)
By this time in the political process, I usually have my mind made up. As of this morning, Mike Huckabee has my vote. I've liked Fred Thompson ever since Law and Order and I was hoping that he would take the platinum opportunity presented to him and blaze a trail straight down Pennsylvania Avenue. During the GOP debate last night, Tennessee Fred communicated to me through unimaginative policy stances and a mildly condescending tone that he didn't really want my vote. Governor Mike, however, has forced me (and the rest of the Republican candidates for that matter) to rethink the assumption that he didn't have a snowball's chance. He might just win the nomination. Here are a few reason why I think he might win the majority of the ever-important Alan Gable demographic.
1. Health consciousness and willingnes to work. Mikey and I participated in the same "weight control program" through the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. His victory over food addiction screams things about his character and he has proven that he's passionate about discipline. The lessons he learned from this personal battle will bleed over into policy decisions and he might just be able to reign in some of the wild spending of my President (W).
2. He's not an annoying yankee mayor. Giuliani is not a good leader, public speaker or baseball fan.(A life-long Yankee fan who switches to pull for the Red Sox in the postseason should not be trusted with the management of a local Dairy Queen, much less the entire country.) In fact, by most accounts, Rudi isn't even a very nice dude. He seems confused about most things and he also seems to think I owe him something because he cleaned up Central Park. Huckabee will eat this clown for lunch in South Carolina.
3. He's reasonable. Most Christians judge a political candidate by his stance on abortion. That's it. Nothing else. I hold pretty strictly to a pro-life ideology but I'm not willing to dismiss anyone over a single issue. Mike is also a pro-lifer but he seems to really try to understand the other side's perspective instead of calling down all sorts of condemnation like most of my conservative Christian right wing comrades do. In a debate, he argues relevant points and does not buttress the tenets of his point by name calling.
4. He'll whip Hillary in a general election. No one else knows how to fight the Clinton political bologna. Mike has already done it and he can do it again.
Huckabee is my guy for now.

Huckabee is a good choice for the Republican nominee. I like him, I even think he was a decent governor. I like the ARkids first legislation, I liked his road improvement legislation. I even like that he lost all that weight.
I don't like that he cut taxes and we went into more debt. (I hate paying taxes, but I would rather do that than have the state go into more debt.) I wish he would've have chosen better financial advisors. I wish he hadn't lowered funding for the Arkansas Governor's Scholarship, that he hadn't raised the cutoff limit for the Arkansas Challenge Grant, and I wish that he hadn't completely cut funding for AEGIS (Advanced Enrichment for the Gifted in Summer).
I like that he's pro-life, but I wish he was against the death penalty and the Iraq war as well.
I didn't like the Covenant Marriage Act. (What's the government doing trying to get more involved in marriage, they should get out of the business all together?) I don't like that he doesn't like civil unions, gay or straight.
I like that he doesn't like the current tax system, but I don't think the "FairTax" system is a good solution. I like that he supports gun ownership, but I wish he supported banning handguns.
I really don't like that he supports the Guantanamo Bay detention camp.
I'm not a Republican, so I can't vote in the Republican primary. I just wanted to share my crazy views.
Stevie, you should vote for Mark Elrod.
The Elrod platform:
-Hates tax cuts.
-Hates handguns, and everything else that is manly, personally protective, and practical.
-Hates weight, and people who have lots of it.
-Hates debt. He doesn't even have a debit card because it's spelled too closely to the "D" word.
-Hates marriage. Everyone has the right to be equally miserable. Tish then slapped him in the face, and he slept on the couch for three months after saying that.
-Hates Guantanemo Bay, Cuba. It's something left over from his time in the navy.
-Hates fair taxes. He thinks the global proletariat should be well-funded by the American bourgeois, who must shoulder the entirety of the taxes to feed, cloth, vaccinate, and protect the rest of the world.
-Hates republicans, and crazy views.
He's your man, Stevie!

By the way, in case anyone thinks I'm serious, I'm kidding....except about the fair tax thing. That's true.
I also mis-spelled "clothe," and said the singular object, cloth, instead.
I just died a little inside.
Cameron,
Elrod's interesting, but he's not qualified to lead the country. I know you were joking, but I should clarify. I don't hate marriage (I'm a happy newlywed), I just don't want the government telling me what they think of it. I like to hunt and where I grew up lots of people made it through the year on the meat they killed. I just don't think handguns are necessary for hunting. And I like the idea of the "FairTax" system as it's called, I just don't think it's the best system. For instance, I think that necessities such as food and clothing should be tax free. (Not all food and clothing, luxury foods and clothing should be taxed) And finally I don't hate Republicans. I like them and understand why they believe what they do, I like Libertarians even more. In the end I'm little more than a boy from the rural South and that holds a definite influence over my thoughts and actions.
Baird, thanks for stopping by.
The Fair Tax thing is a great idea, just like Ron Paul is a great candidate. Neither will ever come to fruition. Huckabee's idea to "get rid of the IRS" should be taken as a joke. Maybe we can pay down the national debt with Stanley nickels.
Your libertarian-esque views are welcome here.
Mike cut some taxes but he also raised some as well. I think the post-secondary education funding cuts that you mentioned were taken away by the inept legislature and not Huckabee himself. That Covenant Marriage thing was lame. As for guns, the 2nd amendment wasn't meant for just hunting and a handgun a a more acceptable "in-home security system" than a wildly erratic shotgun. GetMo is an absolute necessity in the war on terror.
Elrod is a good dude, he's just a liberal. Liberals are usually good people who just aren't paying attention. Hehe.
I know the Second Amendment was meant to include more than hunting, I just don't like handguns. I basically just don't like taking human lives, and handguns are made to kill. There are definitely some legitimate defense arguments though. Although, I've lived in some pretty rough places, places where other people carried guns regularly, and I never felt I would have been safer if I had one two. But it sure feels good to shoot one. I spent many an hour target shooting with handguns and rifles in my youth.
I'm interested to see what the Supreme court rules on the gun case they've decided to take.
You may be right about the post-secondary education cuts and the legislature. We made it in just under the cut, but my brothers didn't. Either way, it didn't encourage the smarter high school kids to stick around and call Arkansas home.
Stevie,
go check out my webpage linked off of Alan's. We discussed platforms a few days ago. We had some interesting dialog under the comments section too.
I'm still undecided, but I like Mike.
